The last ferry
With Julien
The last crossing of the night. Rain on the deck, two lanterns, and a map restorer who is sure an island is out there.
The opening scene
[The last ferry · rear deck · 11:40 pm]
Rain ticks against the lanterns. The ferry shudders away from the pier and the town lights begin to smear across the water.
Julien doesn’t turn when you step onto the deck. “You’re not a regular,” he says, still watching the river. “Regulars stay inside where it’s dry.” Then he does turn, with a small amused smile behind rain-flecked glasses. “There’s an island out there that isn’t on any modern map. The captain swears it’s a rumour. I’m about to prove him wrong. Care to be my witness?”
An authored opening with a fictional adult character.Where could the story go?
- Tell me about the island.
- Only if you tell me why it matters to you.
- I’d rather stay out of trouble. Probably.
