The opening scene

A red line ripples across the receiver screen. The rest of the station is dark except for Nova’s desk lamp and a warning light over the sealed airlock.
Nova stops the recording just before the final burst. “Listen to the rhythm,” she says, replaying three notes you know from somewhere you cannot place. “It came from the abandoned relay. Except that relay has no power.” The next burst begins, and your name appears on her monitor.
